The name "Rake and Riddle" refers to tools used for over a century in the local cockle fishing industry. This large unusual building is, since reopening in late 2025, now primarily a set of Restaurants, with three distinctly different dining experiences! But those just wanting a drink are welcome as well. It is open 7 days a week for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Drinks, but with different opening times for each floor. Due to a steep hillside behind the building, the layout might initially appear to be upside down!
On the Ground floor level is the "Welsh House" Restaurant and Bar, offering a Welsh theme to its menu. It has its own Bar area and is open from 10am each day (for Breakfasts) until 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30pm on Sundays with last food orders being 9.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9pm on Sundays.
On the First floor, are the other two venues and the outside terrace:
The larger part is Cattle & Co Smokehouse & Saloon, which specialises in "Grill house meats". It also has a large Bar and there are a few high level tables, which are usually reserved for use by drinkers.
Alongside is Salvatore’s Pizzeria, which serves handcrafted pizzas made with locally sourced Welsh ingredients.
The opening times for both of the Upstairs Restaurants are: Noon each day until 11pm Monday to Saturday and Noon to 10.30pm on Sundays with last food orders being 9.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9pm on Sundays.
To the rear of the building is a large upstairs garden terrace, which is both a large beer garden and includes a large children’s play area. Within this is "The Shack" an outdoor hut serving drinks, ice creams and sweets throughout the day.
The upstairs Restaurants, Bar and garden terrace can be accessed directly from the car park at the rear. Real Ales are usually from the nearby Gower Brewery.

History:- The history of the building can be traced back to 1865, when it was a Beerhouse called "The Colliers Arms". There was a collery nearby called Berthlwyd with 150 workers, which it supported. In 1949 the pub's name was changed to the "Berthlwyd Inn", in which form it continued to trade as a pub until in 2004 it changed completely to a Chinese Restaurant called the "Sea Garden".
In 2017 it reverted to a Pub and Restaurant called the "Rake and Riddle" with the Restaurant on the ground floor and a main Sports Bar, small games room and pizzeria upstairs. This popular Pub and Restaurant closed suddenly on the 5th January 2025, announcing that they had to restructure and would be back 'very soon'. However a statement in April 2025, by new owners Redefining Dining Co announced the new three Restaurant format currently in operation.
