Terrace Tavern, Gravesend

This Grade II listed architectural gem traded from 1837 until 2010, when the pub-owning company Enterprise Inns decided to flog it off, thus destroying an important part of the town's heritage at a stroke. It was subsequently converted to a 'convenience' store.

The Terrace Tavern had formed part of the tied estate of local brewers Russell's in the early 20th century and their magnificent tiled exterior was retained after ownership passed to Truman's on takeover in 1930. The tiling has thankfully been preserved, probably thanks to the building's listed status.

The pub had many associations with the nearby River Thames. It was a leading light in the town's annual rowing competitions. Britain's first rock 'n' roll star, Tommy Steele, is reported to have enjoyed drinking there whilst a student at the nearby Gravesend Sea School.
