The Phoenix Arms was located to the east of the town centre, dating from 1841. In the early years of the 20th century it was part of the local Russell's brewery tied estate, before passing to Truman's on takeover in 1930. It was rebuilt in 1964 but it is doubtful whether this investment paid off as it closed in 1988 and is now used as a Muslim Cultural Centre.
