A classic example of a traditional wet-led pub, the Cotton Tree is a welcoming local pub right next to the bus terminus. A family run pub since 2015 with a collection of memorabilia based on local transport themes, including canals (Macclesfield canal is close by), trains (Bollington line was closed by Beeching) and planes (Woodford aerodrome, home of the Vulcan). This plus some agricultural implements leads to a very cosy feel complimented by the charms of this stone-built pub with roaring fire and stone floor. The reasonably priced beers are kept in tip top condition with six real ales, 2 of which are guests mostly from the Punch range, but occasionally including some from SIBA. One guest is usually pale and the other sometimes a dark beer. When available the Draught Bass alone merits a visit. No food is served, except for local pies on Friday and Saturday, but there are pickled eggs on sale behind the bar plus the usual snacks. It was 2020 branch cider pub of the year and features a wide range of ciders and perries with up to 20 "beer-in-bag" boxes from SIBA and Westons (not all real cider) and 6 bottles available at any one time. A secluded beer garden is tucked away at the back. Well-behaved children are most welcome. The pub is one of a dwindling number of "back-street" boozers, with dominoes played every Tuesday. Nobody is sure why the pub is called the Cotton Tree although it is probably a reference to the many cotton mills that contribute so much to Bollington’s history. No car park but there is on-road parking outside or further up Ingersley Road. Apart from the monthly folk/jamming sessions the pub has no music or TV, just good conversation. Close to the Gritstone trail which passes higher up the road and the beautiful Ingersley valley nestling in the foothills of the well-known Bollington landmark, White Nancy. This is a great pub if you are waiting for the bus to Macclesfield, the 10 terminus is right outside the front door. Winner of the Branch & Regional Cider Pub of the Year 2023.
