16th Century pub on hte edge of Dartmoor named after a local folklore figure. It should be on everybody's bucket list. The bar walls are decorated with CAMRA certificates and other accolades that have been won over the years. The only pub to win both National POTY (2006) and CPOTY (2023) a truly unique achievement.
An open fire is lit in winter months and the bar has a unique thatched roof. At the rear there is a separate restaurant and access to the garden.
Eight handpumps offer up to four ales in summer, mainly from the West Country. A dark beer is normally available. Fifteen or more real West Country ciders are sold along with a selection of clearly identified non-real ciders / fruit ciders.
Unsurprisingly it has been branch Cider Pub of the Year five times and was NATIONAL Cider Pub of the Year in 2023.
The owner is an ex-butcher, his wife a cook, the food is excellent and if you really want to make the most of the place there are six beautifully finished en-suite guest rooms.
