Historic Interest
A former Home Ales pub called the Toll Bar, adjacent to Tollbar Hill. On the approximate site of one of the gates in the old town wall, the Chapel Bar, which names the street opposite. Part of the line of the wall can be found marked on the pavement where Park Lane meets Maid Marian Way diagonally across the roundabout from the pub. Known for a while as the Gatehouse.
Located in a building called City Gate East designed by Ian Fraser, John Roberts & Partners and built between 1973 and 1976. "one of the city's more sophisticated office developments, slightly oppressive in its bulk and dark colour and with ugly screening to the ground-level car park." [Nikolaus Pevsner/Elizabeth Williamson (2001)]
As at November 2017, the leasehold for the Toll Bar (NT295856) was held by Ei Group plc [Reg. No. 2562808], formerly Enterprise Inns.
