The Stage is part of Westminster Buildings a Grade II listed block (No. 1255198) built in 1909. Named for the stage of the nearby Theatre Royal, the pub was originally called the Hand Inn, followed by the Rat & Parrot and then the Stage Door. The Stage is in Nottingham City Council's Old Market Square Conservation Area. "Includes: Westminster Buildings THEATRE SQUARE. Includes: Nos.1-7 and the Stage Door Public House WOLLATON STREET. Shops, offices and public house. 1909. Red brick with ashlar dressings and gable and hipped slate roofs with various coped brick stacks. Baroque Revival style. 4 storeys plus attics; 3 x 7 bays. Windows are mainly original composite sashes. Most first floor windows have open pediments. Tapering peninsular site, with 5 balanced facades. Entrance front, 3 bays, has rounded corners and bays defined by rusticated pilasters. Central bay has a recessed entrance flanked by plate glass shop windows. Above, a canted bay window, 3 storeys, 3 sashes, flanked by single windows on each floor. Attic has a dormer with segmental broken pediment and finial, flanked by box dormers. Curved corner bays have single windows with cornices. Left return, to Upper Parliament Street, 7 bays, has continuous shopfront, late C20. Above, 2 complementary facades divided by a rusticated pilaster, with 3 canted bay windows, 3 storeys, alternating with pairs of windows and single windows to right. Attics have alternating pedimented and box dormers. Right return, to Wollaton Street, has a similar facade to the left, with 3 altered shopfronts. In the centre, a single bay front topped with a segmental pediment. To right, a lower symmetrical facade, 3 bays, with 2 canted bay windows. INTERIOR has wrought-iron entrance gates with inscribed overthrow, half-glazed double doors with overlight, and open well stair with panelled wainscot." [Historic England].
