Historic Interest

The Cricketers Inn, originally a Shipstones tied house, is a post WWII build circa 1965 and was named after an earlier pub of the same name. In the late 20th / early 21st century the name inxplicably change to the Tottlebrook Inn, which is curious because it is located some distance from the Tottle Brook. Fortunately, the name reverted to The Cricketers. Elain Harwood of Historic England notes that: "1964-5 DC/BS/4/2/14 plans register 1965-7 has nothing BS/643/65, 10 7 1965, illuminated sign, W. B. Starr, Clifford and Carman for Shipstones, granted 17 August 1965. This suggests the date for the completion of the building. See also PS/B/29/1, 1951. These plans show that there was originally a long, narrow, three-bay Shipstones pub known as the Cricketers Arms on Wollaton Road, with a vault and tap room to front and a long, narrow smoke room at the rear, served by lavatories in the yard at the back – the two upper storeys contained six bedrooms and living room with a range, housing the landlord etc. There was small basement. The modern pub stands on a freestanding town centre site adjoining a later Sainsbury’s and surrounded by car parking. It has a ‘V’-shaped plan with a large north-west facing entrance in the angle of the two bars. Inside is now all one space, open only in the later part of the evenings as a disco. The longer space, on the west side of the building has a large lounge with an alcove for a pool table. The smaller space on the north side has the main bar and a raised area for dining." [Elain Harwood / Historic England].

As at November 2017, the freehold for the Cricketers (NT349494) was held by Ei Group plc [Reg. No. 2562808], formerly known as Enterprise Inns.

[Broxtowe Borough Council; Beeston West Ward / Nottinghamshire County Council; Beeston Central & Rylands Division / Broxtowe Parliamentary Constituency].
