The Anchor Inn which can be found besides St Mary's Church was originally built in 1380 probably as as a Courthouse. It is the oldest building in Benfleet and has been in the past a post office and the home of the voluntary fire brigade. It was first called the Blue Anchor when it became a pub. During renovations to the building in 1989, ornate medieval windows were discovered facing the stables across the yard. This has led historians to believe that what is now the front of the building was originally the back. Mentioned in the poem "I know an Inn" which is an Ode to the Anchor written in Italy 1918 by Samuel Soddy. The pub has a very extensive selection of spirits offering 80 Gins and 50 different Whiskies. 2 real ales are served.
