An independent free house built around 1869 and situated in to the west of the town centre on an unusual corner plot. A short walk from the new Westgate Shopping Centre, the Imperial Standard offers a far more traditional drinking experience than at the identikit eateries found there. The pub has a predominantly local clientèle, but is welcoming to all, with a pool table and dartsboard around traditional seating areas. Live music often features on Saturday evening. No food is served but customers are welcome to order takeaways to eat in the pub, with a selection of menus provided.

The pub was granted Asset of Community Value status in September 2015.
