Dog Hangs Well, Ludlow (Dog)

A parlour pub which opened in 2015. A sympathetically re-created good old-fashioned pub in a classic Georgian setting.

It is not immediately obvious that a pub is there: look for the No. 14 door and the subtle lamp above, if the lamp is lit then the pub is open. A small corridor leads you into the lobby area which connects the two main rooms. At the back of the building is the bar which is the main focus of the establishment, with a solid oak serving counter set on the remains of an old shed roof! The room is adorned with collected pub artefacts, though the usual impression of the room one is left with is the buzz of traditional pub conversation. When busy, customers will be found spilling out into the front room. The pub name encapsulates several different elements. Part of the former Royal forest which surrounded Ludlow was known as the 'Dog Hanging' woods. This was down to the practice of deterring poachers via the display of confiscated hunting dogs. The name also brings to mind the 'Gate Hangs Well’. a once popular pub name which fits in with Ludlow's seven medieval gates of which only Broad Gate remains.

Note that under-16s are not permitted, neither is smoking anywhere in the vicinity of the pub (including e-cigs). In keeping with the ambience, mobile phones are also prohibited from being used on the premises. Cash only.
