This Pub is Permanently Closed

CONVERTED TO A TESCO EXPRESS which opened in August 2013. The George IV was CLOSED by mid 2012 and was subsequently bought by Tesco who applied for planning permission for ancillary work before conversion to a supermarket (Planning permission for the shop conversion itself fell within permitted development rights). Local campaigners raised a petition which saw the pub registered as an Asset of Community Value, however this ACV listing proved to be of little value to the community as Tesco already had possession. The pub had been most recently a music bar charging for admission after 6pm. Formerly Southside Bar, previously George Four, originally George IV.

Historic Interest

Local listing:- Former George IV Hotel. Late 19th C public house in exuberant freestyle. Pub front has canted corner entrance in a Moorish arch and other fancy detailing to the pilasters and consoles. Ping granite stallriser. Historic joinery with leaded lights remains. Signage fascia terminated in a balustrade. First and second floors in red brick with painted stone detailing. – oriel on the canted corner rises to become a domed tower at roof level. Second floor windows have balconettes with delicate ironwork. Balustrade parapet, fancy gable (carrying name ‘THE GEORGE IV HOTEL) and chimney. Delicate casement windows and sashes to upper floors. New access ramp and steps faced in matching pink granite.
