This Pub is Permanently Closed
THE CASTLE IS NOW DEMOLISHED AND REPLACED WITH A NEW BLOCK (see photos) following its closure on 1st JANUARY 2013. Its ASSET OF COMMUNITY VALUE status ensures that the new development includes a replacement pub/bar as ACV status persists even after demolition.
The gable end of the new building has re-instated the original stone plaque from the 1965 building.
The new is due to be completed in summer/autumn 2015.
Thanks to the efforts of the Defend the Castle campaign against developer/owner Languard’s original plans there is also a condition on the planning consent which removes permitted development rights. Ominously Young's had sold the freehold to the property company in 2011.
The Castle was a 1964 Young's pub which had replaced a much older pub of the same name when the new flats were built around Battersea High Street. The '60s pub had an intimate, candle-lit interior and conservatory as well as a very popular garden area which was considered a real local asset for the residents of the surrounding blocks of flats.
Unfortunately the garden area has been lost in the redevelopment but the good news is the provision of a new/replacement pub on the ground floor of the new block..
