The first known written reference to this large town centre pub dates from 1489, when it was closely involved in activities at the port of Penryn and with the prominent people passing through - Henry VII is said to have slept here. Up to three beers may be on offer, but often there is only one available, with brews from Cornwall or a regional brewery usually forming the selection. Much of the pub's interior is authentic, although now open plan but divided into a number of compartmentalised drinking spaces on split levels, the pub being built on the side of a hill. At street level the main bar and drinking area is relatively restricted, but the next level down is a drinking and games area with pool, football table, punchball and other games available; this is far more roomy and has its own bar for busy occasions (and an interesting slope in the floor - trip hazard!). Controlled children and dogs are welcome down here. Beyond this is a newer extension, fitted out with a stage and dance floor. The outside drinking space is a patio and there is a smoking area. The car park at the back is free to pub customers but you must ask bar staff for a King's Arms car pass to avoid possible clamping. The pub hosts a variety of charitable events; live entertainment Fri & Sat eves.
