This Pub is Permanently Closed

James Lamb was the occupier of this 'public house and garden' on the 1836 Tithe Map. It was on the Turnpike Road, [the present day A533] so was possibly a Coaching Inn. On the OS 1875 map as the New Inn, suggesting a possible new build in late Victorian times. Part of Marston's pub estate since at least 1980. Has had mixed history of open/closed during the past 10 years. For sale via Marston's. They have had few inquiries to date, however the sale of the property is available for alternative use as well as for a pub.

Sold at auction [Butters John Bee] January 2015 for £192,000. Compass Fire Solutions LLP the buyer.

Change of use to B1 premises granted.

Historic Interest

Interesting snippet from Denis Charles Sharp: The New Inn was so named because it replaced the former public house which operated in Townsend Farm, which stands about fifty yards from the New Inn, on Love Lane. At that time the road to Sandbach ran at a junction from Love Lane, past Townsend Farm, past a couple of houses(still there) and crossed the brook to the east of the present road. I was born there and we sheltered in the old beer cellar when German bombers flew over to attack Crewe. Further additional information (April 2025): Further to my details of the former pub at Townsend Farm, I can confirm that the former pub was called The Noon Sun. The new road where the New Inn was built was the Spann Smithy to Talke Turnpike Road. The Turnpike Trust built and owned the Pub on land alongside the Turnpike. There was a side gate and toll house.
