Historic Interest
Pub opened in 1878 on Union Terrace (now Marine Promenade) on the corner with Rowson Street. A Bent’s Brewery pub (taken over by Bass in 1967). Later a free house described in 1990 as two pubs in one with noisy disco bar at the front and a traditional lounge selling Draught Bass. Closed since at least 2013. The site was acquired by Wetherspoons who owned and operated the next door pub, the Master Mariner. An application to demolish was refused but a later plan to extend the Master Mariner and merge it into the Travellers Rest was approved. During the extension work, the building was deemed to be unsafe and was demolished in December 2022. Work then started on the site to build an extension to the Master Mariner next door but the project was abandoned in April 2023 and the site of the former Travellers Rest was left empty.
