This Pub is Closed Long Term
WHEN PASSED IN NOV 2025, IT WAS NOTED THIS PUB HAD CLOSED DOWN AND SECTIONS OF THE PREMISES WERE BEING USED FOR OTHER BUSINESSES OR OFFERED' TO LET'. THE FUTURE IS UNCONFIRMED AND UNCERTAIN.
The northern end of the building had been incorporated into an adjacent car sales business. The central and southern sections of the building appeared to be unused and there was a 'To Let' sign being displayed on the external wall.
In Oct 2024, the City of Bradford MDC granted planning permission (ref. 24/02729/FUL) to convert the pub into two residential flats. When the premises were visited in Dec 2025, work in accordance with the submitted plans had not commenced.
The previous entry in June 2021, when it was open as the 'Hand and Shuttle' pub stated:
Locals' pub off Tong Street and close to the Dudley Hill roundabout. Large open-plan pub. Loud DJ on weekend evenings. No real ales are available.
The premises have had a varied history. The timeline appears to be:
- Known as the 'Hand and Shuttle' public house in Aug 2008 (it was the 'Milestone' pub sometime before this and appears to have been the 'Hand and Shuttle' before that - dates unconfirmed).
- Renamed Ashiana (restaurant) sometime between Aug 2008 and Oct 2012.
- Renamed Aleena (restaurant) sometime between Sep 2014 and Jul 2015.
- Renamed 'Hand & Shuttle' and reopened as a pub sometime between Jul 2015 and Sep 2016.
- Dec 2019: Planning application (ref. 19/05305/FUL) submitted for 'Partial change of use of public house (A4) to car sales and forecourt...'. Granted in May 2020 (during first COVID-19 lockdown).
- 'Hand and Shuttle' public house confirmed as being open in Jun 2021.
- By Jul 2023 the north section was fenced off and the centre and SE wing was 'To Let - shop unit with parking'. Hand & Shuttle signage removed.
- Jul 2024 onwards: North section in use as Dudley Hill Car Sales.
- Jul 2024 & Apr 2025: Central and south sections still appeared unused with the same 'To Let' sign on display.
- Aug 2024: Planning application (ref. 24/02729/FUL) submitted for 'Change of use of public house (ground floor) to 2 flats (C3)'. Granted in Oct 2024.
