This Pub is Permanently Closed

Confirmed in Jun 18 as now demolished apart from the facade, a new building now built including it.

Seems converted to commercial use. A beautiful mosaic tiled frieze to a wall has been retained. Possibly a kitchen showroom?

1848 pub next door to the closed South Kentish Town tube station. The last incarnation was a 'musical drinking establishment'. Licence revoked for many reasons and surrendered by Enterprise in March 2013. Notice of demolition refused by Camden Council and subsequently dismissed on appeal. Planning application to demolish not determined and again dismissed on appeal. Enforcement notice in place to reinstate roof. and external features.

Historic Interest

Local Camden listing:- Mid 19th century public house on corner of Kentish Town Road and Castle Road. Rendered facade with find strong detailing including rusticated quoins, window architraves with projecting cornices at first floor and bracketed cills at second floor, and a substantial cornice. This building replaces an earlier pub in slightly different location on the site called the Castle Tavern, as recorded in a coloured print of c1855 by John Wykeham Archer, held by the British Museum. An undated quote states ‘a splendid gin palace is erected in lieu of the Old Castle Tavern. Sold and all cleared away for improvements in 1849’.
