Active Campaign
A group of villagers have launched a campaign to save their pub from being converted for residential use. The White Swan at Thornton-le-Clay, near Malton, closed in March 2020 after the last tenants did not renew their lease and the owners of the building put the property up for sale. The new owners have submitted a planning application to change its use to residential and convert it into a five-bedroom home. A Save Our Swan group has been formed to lobby Ryedale Council to reject the planning application and list the pub as an Asset of Community Value. They have registered a Community Benefit Society - The White Swan Inn Community Group Limited. The group made an offer to purchase the pub in Jan 2024 (see article), but this offer was turned down by the owner and the White Swan remains on the market, substantially over the valuation the community group had done. See the group's website for more details.
