This Pub is Closed Long Term

The Mop was a small traditional gem of a backstreet boozer. Many Boltonians didn't even know of its existence. Its survival laid testament to the friendly welcome. The pub sat alone in a small side street off Halliwell Rd. As you walked in, turning right into the small cosy bar which led into a snug with serving hatch to the bar. This area was later dominated by a pool table. On the left was a larger lounge. Out back was an extensive smoking and garden area. Rock bands often played at weekends. It could be argued that the pub would have benefited from some improvements, but more importantly it retained a traditional charm which had already been lost in so many other similar premises which are also now a fading memory.

Historic Interest

In May 1981 it was a rare Free house but was a Scottish & Newcastle keg outlet However by March 1984 it was selling cask Youngers IPA and Castle Eden Ale (H). However by 1985 it was keg only again. By 1989 it was listed in the Beer in Bolton Guide as selling Youngers IPA and Scotch Bitter. By 1995 Moorhouse's Beers were being advertised in the Pub Scene 3 magazine. It was noted that by July 1996 it was Bank Top Fred's Cap that was on the bar. Over the next few years the beers varied and sometimes there was no cask at all, Theakstons and Thwaites cask beers featured. By 2017 the cask beers were getting less frequently available. As the pub was family owned post Covid they decided to call it a day and the pub closed and the furniture was sold off. Due to personal circumstances The Mop is to close permanently. We would like to thank all our customers for their support over the years. Be safe and take care Ann, Cat and Danny.
