Three Star Heritage Pubs
Greater Glasgow & Clyde Valley, LAURIESTON BAR, Glasgow. The Laurieston, a Glasgow institution, is for sale. Well known for various film & TV appearances, it is also very popular with tourists and locals alike. The pub has been operating since 1836, but it is the extremely rare 1960’s interior that makes it so special from our perspective. The Clancy family, who have run it for 40 years, have made the decision to sell up with the reassurance that it will remain open until the right buyer is found. The freehold is on the market for £750,000 through Christie & Co. It is grade C listed and let’s hope a sympathetic owner is found. Thanks to Mark Finney for this news. See: Scotsman . |
Devon, DREWE ARMS, Drewsteignton. We reported on the plans for community buyout of the famous Devon pub in the August and September bulletins. Originally the deadline for the share issue was the 29th October but now the Drewsteignton Community Society has extended that deadline until the 12th November to help get them over the line and capitalise on recent national press & TV coverage. So far, they have raised an impressive £503,000. Their target is £600,000 to buy the freehold, undertake necessary works and prepare the pub ready for opening, which they hope will be by Christmas. West Midlands, WOODMAN, Birmingham. We reported in August last year on the sad closure of the Woodman, due to the economic climate and disruption due to nearby HS2 works. Jamie Hooper brings us the good news now that Simon Linford in partnership with John Brierley, who owns the Swan & Railway, Wigan, have taken on the lease and are undertaking refurbishment works including removal of some modern additions. Opening is likely at some point between Christmas and Easter. |
Worcestershire, BELL & CROSS, Clent. Good news that the Bell & Cross reopened on September 29th following its closure in August. Former head chef Chris Dukes and his family have taken on the lease, so expect that it will remain very much food orientated. |
Greater London South East, FELLOWSHIP INN, Catford. Disappointing news that Homegrown Pubs closed the Fellowship on October 1st after having taken on the lease and reopening the pub in September 2022. The large ‘improved public house’ includes a cinema and was part of a massive £4m development that included provision of community facilities. The Fellowship is owned by Pheonix Housing Association who have stated that the closure is temporary and new tenants are being sought. Thanks to Roger Corbett for this update. |
