East Yorkshire, POLAR BEAR, Hull. The Polar Bear is due to re-open on August 24th. It closed a year ago when the previous operator went into administration. Staff at the music venue created a Community Interest Company and crowdfunded £19,000 in order to buy the lease. The plan is currently to open only as a late night music venue 10.30pm to 2.30am. But PHG is in talks with the owner about the possibilities for a more flexible approach, which might restore some pub usage at other times. See: Hull Daily Mail. Thanks to Jamie Hooper for the link.

Greater London East, EASTBROOK, Dagenham. A planning application has been submitted for a large extension to this large inter war pub, recognised as one of the best and most complete interiors surviving from this period. The previously unlisted pub was grade II* listed in 2009 following an application by CAMRA. The application states that the historic interior will not be altered as part of the development. Thanks to Roy Tunstall for this information.

Borders, CROOK INN, Tweedsmuir. Work is finally starting on the Crook Inn, shut since 2006. Sadly it is expected that the historic public bar will be totally refurbished as part of the redevelopment. So it is not expected that it will retain its National Inventory status. Thanks to Jamie Hooper for the update: BBC Scotland.

West Midlands, VILLA TAVERN, Birmingham. Mick Slaughter reports that this 1920s red brick and terracotta pub is shut and that the lease is available from Admiral Taverns: Admiral Taverns. Pleased to see that the photo of the pub on the Admiral site now shows the correct construction date above the door of 1925. Previously this claimed to be 1897.

This work does not impact on the historic interior. The pub has been shut since March 2018. We reported an expected re-opening this summer in the June bulletin. Inns on the Edge. The April Bulletin mentioned the Inns on the Edge project in Lincolnshire. Funded by Historic England and run by the County Council, this is a pilot project to identify, record and consider the viability of historic pubs on or near the county's coastline. It has now been joined by a similar pilot looking at rural pubs in Shropshire called Inn Sites - more detail at TDR Heritage. Both projects, which will run for a year, have now started work. They will be jointly overseen by a National Engagement Group comprising representatives from Historic England and both Councils plus bodies like the Plunkett Foundation, British Beer & Pub Association and Pub is the Hub. It is being chaired by Paul Ainsworth who also chairs Pub Heritage Group. They also post regularly on facebook: Inn Sites facebook.
