This Pub is Permanently Closed

Lively Grade II Listed town centre bar which was, at the time it closed, the oldest remaining pub in town, dating from the 16th or 17th century (may have been part of adjacent White Hart at some point). 3 letting rooms. Shakespeare once played at the pub. According to Alfred Hedges' book, "Inns & Inn Signs of Norfolk & Suffolk", Susan Girling, a Sudbury benefactor who died in 1724 [...] bequeathed it to the town, on condition that the rents should be put to a fund so that the poor might be taught to read & write. Closed & boarded up for some while. A planning application to turn the building into a clothes shop has been granted. Photographs of this pub and more up-to-date and detailed information about it can be found at suffolk.camra.org.uk/pub/929
