Good choice of real ales. Strong emphasis on eating with good selection of mid-range meals. A delightful back street inn, with lounge bar, restaurant and courtyard. Regular events and offers. Due to the age and layout of the building, accessibility can be limited in certain areas.
Historic Interest
Also site of former Phoenix brewery. This pub was listed as the Compasses in the 1891 census, which suggests that the Compasses, Acton Green, Sudbury, listed in 1839-40 Pigot's Directory may refer to this pub. In June 1982 edition of Last Orders*** it was reported that landlord, Les Scott had been ill recently & had time off over the recent bank holiday, the first time he had not worked over a BH since 1953! The Phoenix Court flats nearby are built on the site of the defunct Phoenix Brewery, so named because it arose from the ashes of a fire in 1890. This pub reopened in Oct 2013. Photographs of this pub and more historical information about it can be found at suffolk.camra.org.uk/pub/952
