Previous a bar named KuPP and then a smokehouse restaurant, this has now become a JD Wetherspoon site named the Sir Alexander Fleming; the name has been taken from another (now closed) pub further south in Paddington. Unlike very many other JDW sites this is not a splendid conversion of a heritage building, but is on the ground floor of an almost new building and not as big as many 'Spoons.
The entrance, on the pathway alongside the canal cul-de-sac basin, leads into a bar with picture windows overlooking the water and across to parts of St. Mary's Hospital. The interior is very modern with mustard coloured exposed brick and screed walls, then titmouse blue or mushroom paint; the floor has a typical JDW unique patterned carpet then terrazzo flooring around the bar. There is a lot of exposed ductwork, photos and prints of the area from yesteryear, and a mixture of furniture styles including some booth-style banquettes. Lighting is bright, coming from various lamp styles. WCs are reported to be quite small with access up a few steps between the bar and the open kitchen, although there is also an accessible toilet at ground level.
Six handpumps offer cask ales but possibly with a smaller choice than other London Wetherspoons. Breakfast is served from opening time until noon; and the main menu food service starts at 11.30am. Note that alcohol may not be served until 10am, or noon on Sundays.
Historic Interest
Sir Alexander Fleming first observed and named penicillin in 1928 whilst working at nearby St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington. Its development was carried out at Oxford University just in time for the "wonder drug" to save many lives in the latter stages of World War II. At date of this entry the hospital is planning for the Fleming Centre – a new, state-of-the-art research and public engagement hub, due to open in 2028.
