This Pub is Temporarily Closed

Previous a bar named KuPP and then a smokehouse restaurant, this is now to become a JDW site named Sir Alexander Fleming, due to open on 30 Sept. 2025. The name has been taken from another (now closed) pub further south in Paddington. Unlike very many other JDW sites this is not a splendid conversion of a heritage building, but is almost new and covers the ground floor of an entire block.

The entrance, on the pathway alongside the canal cul-de-sac basin, leads into the vast high-ceilinged bar with picture windows overlooking the water and across to parts of St. Mary's Hospital.

Historic Interest

Sir Alexander Fleming first observed and named penicillin in 1928 whilst working at nearby St. Mary's Hospital in Paddington. Its development was carried out at Oxford University just in time for the "wonder drug" to save many lives in the latter stages of World War II. As at mid-2025 the hospital is planning for the Fleming Centre – a new, state-of-the-art research and public engagement hub.
