Black Lion, Bayswater

Listed as an ale house since 1704. At the height of the Napoleonic invasion scare it was used as the registration house for the Paddington Volunteers. Now on a busy main road and facing Hyde Park, this pub draws tourists to boost the regular trade. The interior, with its attractive windows, has swag and tail curtains, is well carpeted, comfortably furnished and features chandelier lighting below an attractive patterned ceiling. The exterior has red granite pillars and an art nouveau sign in black and gold dating from the 1890 rebuild which cost £2,850. As at mid-June 2014 the freehold of this pub was sold by Spirit Pub Company for £27million. Although not statutorily listed, the pub is "an unlisted building of merit in the Queensway Conservation Area".
