Refurbished and reopened in 2019 as part of the regeneration of the Victoria Quarter of New Brighton and renamed after one of the founders of the town. Single room pub split into three areas served from one bar. Tastefully decorated with local photos and comfortable seating it is bright and airy with a lively atmosphere. Situated on the main shopping street with outside seating on the pavement, close to the seafront attractions and the Floral Pavilion Theatre.

Historic Interest

Dating from 1891 as the Railway, a Birkenhead Brewery pub, then a Bent’s (from 1967 Bass) brewery pub, later leased to Higsons. Selling Higsons beer in the 1980s. Described in 1990 as a large street corner pub with basic bar and quiet back lounge, by that time selling Stones Bitter and Draught Bass by handpump. The Railway closed in November 2017 for over a year and reopened in March 2019 with a change of name to the James Atherton. The pub was renamed again on a temporary basis as the Three Bellends in October 2020.
