This historic pub; in a beautiful small market town, close to the Guildhall, parish church, museum and Wenlock Priory; is hidden behind an attractive but unassuming frontage.

This lively, friendly pub is popular with both locals, and visitors to this town centre local. Whilst the front bar is rather small, there is additional seating to the rear.

Three regular ales and two changing guest ales are all on hand-pull with at least two beers from Shropshire breweries. The front bar has timber-backed settles with soft cushions, an original terracotta quarry tiled/wooden floor and two open fires places with old tile surrounds. Original beams feature with a collection of whiskey water jugs hanging from them. Access to the rear bar is to the left of the servery and along a narrow passageway.

The cosy and intimate rear bar has an abundance of old timbers and is dominated by a large fireplace with a heavy wooden beam and mantel shelf. The servery in this room is used during meal times. Every effort is made to accommodate wheelchair access to this room within the limits of the aged building.

There is a wide variety of meals, mostly home made, available including a choice of smaller meals, pub favourites, burgers, basket meals and vegetarian options. Bar snacks are also available.

The pub does not have its own car park, but there is a public pay & display car park at the rear which is accessed off St Mary's Road (no charge after 6pm or on Sundays).

Historic Interest

The beam over the fireplace in the front bar has carved initials and dates of former licensees, all members of the Yates family, who held the license between 1835 and 1958. The first recorded owner was a Thomas Bowdler in 1714.
