A pub with a good reputation for food, close to the River Deben.

Historic Interest

On the 1 June 1859 the East Suffolk Railway Line was opened from Ipswich to Great Yarmouth, though the pub dates from before that time - according to the 1904 Woodbridge licensing records its license was issued in 1840 (this was a full license, so it may even have been trading earlier as a beerhouse). It must have had an earlier name & been renamed the Railway Tavern to take advantage of the new line. A report in the Ipswich Journal** on 31 Mar in 1887 states that : The Railway Tavern, Melton, Nr Woodbridge to be sold by auction on 04 Apr 1887 with the effects of Mr H. SCARFE.
