Historic Interest

Named for the Victorian hero Colonel Frederick Gustavus Burnaby (1842-1885) who was killed at the Battle of Abu Klea whilst attempting to rescue a wounded comrade. Six foot four and twenty stone, he had a larger than life personality to match and was the inspiration for a number of contemporary paintings and written works, including Henry Newbolt's poem "Vitai Lampada".

In 1889, the Colonel Burnaby was a fully licensed establishment under victualler Mrs M. Topham, Hartley Road then being called Outgang Lane (Wright). Re-named for a while as the Penny Farthing, this pub was once a Whitbread outlet.

The Colonel Burnaby was registered as an Asset of Community Value on the 10th March 2016 and was nominated by the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA.
