Earl of Chesterfield, Shelford

Former primitive Methodist chapel founded in 1840, that has long been converted into the village's only pub. In 2012 there were real fears that it would be closed and it had become very run down. However, it was purchased by a consortium of 40 local residents who raised £400,000 to buy and renovate it. It is now a superb large and comfortable village inn with a separate restaurant in what had previously been the chapel. Bouncy castle, barbecue and pizza oven in the garden at weekends, when weather permits.

Historic Interest

Asset of Community Value (RBC/ACV/011) registered 11th January 2016 and nominated by the Nottingham Branch of CAMRA (Ref. ACV 016).This expired at the end of the 10th January 2021.

The chapel continued a religious tradition in the village, which was home to an Augustinian Priory between c1170 and 1536. The Priory was acquired by the Stanhope family after the dissolution and replaced by Shelford Manor, which was destroyed during the English Civil War. Shelford owes its importance to being a crossing point on the Trent, the name being Anglo-Saxon for "shallow ford". A later ferry operated until the mid-20th century to Stoke Bardolph across the river, the location of the winding gear still being visible. For many years in the 19th century, this ferry was operated by William Cupit, who also ran Stoke Bardolph's Ferry Boat Inn. Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield and his sons rallied to the Royalist cause during the Civil War. The manor was fortified under the command of one of Stanhope's sons and then beseiged by parliamentary forces in 1645. The manor was stormed, half the garrison killed and the house and its defences razed to the ground. (Cornelius Brown, "A History of Nottinghmshire" 1891).

One of a cluster of pubs in the area named for the Chesterfield/Stanhope family, including Earls of Chesterfield in both Carlton (demolished) and Gedling (re-named the Gedling Inn) and the Chesterfield in Bingham.

As at November 2017, the Freehold (NT381650) was owned by the Shelford Pub Company Limited [Reg. No. 7863704].
