This Pub is Closed Long Term

"The landlord has passed away. There is a sign by the door saying that the funeral was on 1st September. Pub is closed. I have no idea whether this means temporarily closed, or permanently closed." We hope it is only temporary.

A pleasant Irish pub, located in a quiet side street, and one you might not expect to do real ale, though they now have up to three regular beers, usually all from Southwark. Food was served at lunchtimes, and a separate restaurant area was open in the evenings Mon - Thu. Note - 13/04/22 - kitchen closed due to staff shortages, what was the restaurant area is now for general seating.There is limited outside seating and plenty indoors as the pub is larger than it appears from the outside.

Historic Interest

Grade II listed by English Heritage in 1974.

(Formerly listed as Nos.3 AND 5 Duke of Wellington Public House) 14/05/74 GV II Public house on a corner site with the main frontage to Argyle Walk. Early C19. Yellow stock brick. Three storeys and basements. Main frontage four windows and one-window return. Later C19 wooden public house frontage with splayed corner. Pilasters carry an entablature with projecting cornice; panelled dado, windows altered. Entrances with part glazed panelled doors. Whidbourne Street facade has a round-arched house doorway with fanlight and panelled door. Gauged brick flat arches to recessed sashes. Parapets.
