Now a private house.
Close to the village green where cricket is played. In private ownerships since 2014 and there has been significant refurbishment and decoration here though the beams remain as well as the inglenook fireplace for the winter evenings. An intimate atmosphere prevails in the restaurant. The food and beer offering is different from that at the owner's other pub across the green. Here the menu is more up-market and will be centred on seafood and vegetarian. The name refers to a local benefactor who lived at Hemsted House which is now part of Benenden School. The pub also has connections with the infamous Hawkhurst gang of smugglers.
