The hotel has a public bar at the front and behind that is Fothergill’s bar, named after the former owner during the 1930s and 1940s. Further back still is the conservatory restaurant.

Historic Interest

A Grade II* listed building, this former coaching inn dates back to the early 16th century, at which time it was known as Ye Sygne of Swanne. Christian VII of Denmark lunched here in 1768; and the Court Leet was still held here occasionally in the 19th century. The elaborate pub sign dates back to the 18th century and is considered by some to be one of the finest examples of wrought-ironwork craftsmanship in England. During the 1930s and 1940s, the hotel was owned by the infamous innkeeper John Fothergill. whose books include 'An Innkeeper's Diary' and 'My Three Inns'.
