Originating the 1650s as a very small inn situated within a row of cottages this pub now take in the entire remaining thatched terrace. The interior front part of the premises comprises the bar area, and occupies the old cottages now knocked through to create one large room but retaining enough partitioning to keep a cottage ambiance enhanced by exposed low ceiling timbers, flagstone floors and old fireplaces. At the rear and on the left are large new extensions, and these form a large restaurant where all tables are set out for dining. At the front is a paved patio, and at the back a tree-shaded lawned garden with picnic tables. The regular 148 and 158 bus services to Leicester or Hinckley stop outside. The address is frequently referred to as Leicester Forest East, but the pub is actually located within Kirby Muxloe parish.

Historic Interest

Originating the 1650s as a very small inn, but expanded to take over the whole terrace of cottages. Bought by Everards Brewery in about 1908. It was sold in 2002 to the pub company which later became Mitchells & Butlers. Extended many times over the years to become a a hotel in the 1980s and later a Travel Lodge was built adjacent. During the 1920s and 1930s, a giant whale bone stood outside, supposedly reaching 10 feet at the apex.
