Whitsbury hides among the hills of the borderland, where Hampshire rolls towards Dorset and Wiltshire. It is racehorse country; Desert Orchid was trained at Whitsbury Manor Stables. This 18th-century building was originally farm cottages, and has housed a wheelwright's and the village bakery (a defunct oven remains). The interior is on two levels and divided into several areas - beamed, wood-panelled, bare-bricked, and with seating that includes settles and pews. Good outside seating is available.

The pub is proud to be a free house and three handpumps serve changing ales from local breweries. Food is available lunchtimes and evenings most days and is comparably priced for the area while not sacrificing quality. Booking or calling ahead is advised as the pub often closes for private functions, wakes weddings etc.
