Attractive Wadworth tied house in the old part of town. Carefully rebuilt & restored after severe war damage, maintaining its medieval charm. Monthly Jazz nights.

Historic Interest

Grade II listed - Historic England List UID: 1092062. Foundations & cellars date from around 1220 by Benedict Ace, one of the earliest known Mayors of Southampton who was Mayor between 1237 and 1245. The building suffered serious damage in a French raid in 1338. The remains of the original building were incorporated into the current building, then named Bere House, around 1494 and was reputedly Southampton's first brewery. It was renamed Duke of Wellington after the battle of Waterloo. The pub suffered more war damage in WWII and was only fully restored in 1962; photos from the 1950s show it missing the front upper floor.
