This Pub is Permanently Closed
The Windmill was situated slightly to the south of the town centre. It is first recorded as trading in 1780 and served the thirsty townsfolk for 230 years. Whether either of the two windmills that stood in the town in the late 18th century was visible from the pub is a matter for conjecture. It appears from the archive image to have been part of the tied estate of Maidstone brewers Style & Winch during the early 20th century, eventually passing to Courage after a succession of mergers and takeovers.
It was a lively establishment during the 1970s and 80s, with darts very much to the fore. No doubt the pub's trade was affected by the severed planning blight that affected almost the whole of Lowfield Street during and well beyond the 1990s. Be that as it may, the pub-owning company decided that it wasn't making enough money for them, and sounded the death knell for the pub in 2010. After closure it was converted into a funeral emporium.
