This Pub is Closed Long Term
The Manor Shades was a no-frills town centre pub that traded from 1879 until 2012. For the last few years it was re-branded as Pauline's Manor Shades "Where the Heart of Gravesend Beats" - see photo, but even this was not enough to save it. In 2020 it remains pretty much as it was and a rescuer would be welcome.
Known between 1904 and 1925 as The Burton Ale Shades, the pub had been part of the nearby Walker's brewery tied estate until the brewery was sold to Charrington's in 1904. It continued as a Charrington's house for most of the rest of the 20th century, but in its later years did not offer real ale and this may have contributed to its demise.
