Bread was baked here until 1955. The defunct bakery is now part of the lounge bar. In the 19th century the pub was a beerhouse known as the "Loaf and Cheese". Reputedly the pub's kitchen back door key also fitted the local lock-up for drunks! Today it has a restaurant and accommodation and is close to decent walking country.
