This Pub is Permanently Closed
The Angel closed down in February 2011 following withdrawal of the licence by Sutton Council and a mysterious fire. Work is now starting in 2013 to convert the premises to a Tesco Express, and the supermarket chain plan to retain the distinctive frontage.
The Angel was originally a Courage pub, probably formed from a pair of houses built in early 1800s. It was originally run by Style & Winch brewery of Maidstone, later acquired by Barclays and then by Courage. For several years it was closely connected with the Sutton Montpelier Cricket Club, who played opposite during the 1850s.
