Golden Lion, Port Isaac

Directions

You want to visit - You have this in

This fine old 18th-century pub in the heart of Port Isaac has several drinking areas and a small balcony overlooking the harbour. Its layout of 3 small rooms, drinking corridor and old fittings earn it recognition on CAMRA's Regional Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. It also has slightly uneven bare-boarded floors. The games room downstairs was originally 'the Bloody Bones' locals' bar, which boasts a smugglers' tunnel down to a causeway on the beach. A small flagstoned courtyard at the rear offers alfresco drinking.

One star - A pub interior of special national historic interest

Listed status: II

Early 18th-century pub near the harbour end of the steep narrow main street. A sizeable entrance hall with half-height panelling has a former off-sales hatch and a corner seat for drinkers. The small bare-boarded bar on the left has an old counter, Victorian tiled, cast-iron and wood surround fireplace, old dado panelling and wall-bench seating, but the bar-back is recent. In the bar on the right, also bare-boarded, are a post-war counter, modern bar- back, old fireplace, window bench and corner settle. The patio doors are a later insertion. A wide opening gives into a third room, formerly in domestic use, with an old range fireplace. Upstairs, two rooms have been merged to form the dining room.

General information about historic pub interiors

Early 18th-century pub situated near the harbour end of the steep narrow main street - park at the top of the village. It retains three bare boarded rooms and a drinking passage, with hatch and shelf, accessed from the street level door. The small bare boarded bar on the left has a counter possibly 100 years old, Victorian tiled, cast iron and wood surround fireplace, old dado panelling and wall bench seating, but the bar back was replaced c.2002. The bare boarded bar on the right has a post-war counter (possibly replacing a hatch?), modern bar back, old slate and wood surround fireplace and old corner settle.

Large bare-boarded drinking passage / hall with uneven floor, a good stained and leaded window, tiny fixed corner seat for one, old dado panelling and hatch / doorway for staff. A former domestic room with a double width doorway makes up the third room with old range fireplace with a wood surround and high mantle shelf, but the panelling is modern. Upstairs two rooms have been joined together to form the 'Look Out' dining room which has few fittings of any age and views over the picturesque harbour. Downstairs is the Bloody Bones Bar, a former restaurant, which is only open at weekends.
