Wonderful historic Grade II building saved from rack and ruin by two brothers who refurbished the building themselves over a couple of years. What started as a hobby turned into a labour of love for them. Original features have been retained such that the interior is worthy of inclusion in CAMRA's inventory of pubs, with its historic interior of national importance. Now under new ownership, there is more of an emphasis on top quality meals. No real ale served at the time of writting.

Historic Interest

The building is Grade II listed and was the former home of the 1st Duke of Cleveland who was also the 3rd Earl of Darlington - William Henry (Harry) Vane who was born in July 1766 and died in January 1842. The building was originally the Duke's summer house. The main building had no windows overlooking St. Hilda's Church as the Duke allegedly had a disagreement with the Rector when it was built. In 1833, the residence was called Hartlepool House. Original features have been retained such that the interior is worthy of inclusion in CAMRA's inventory of pubs, with its historic interior of national importance. Especially of note is the oak pannelled snug.
