This Pub is Permanently Closed

This pub closed permanently in March 2013.

Although the first pub was erected on this site in 1688, the third and final building to bear The Porcupine name was built in 1922 by Thomas & Edge of Woolwich, who were active in the 1920’s & 30’s and built several pubs in London. The only surviving pub designed by Thomas and Edge which is still trading, appears to be the Bear and Ragged Staff, at 2 London Road, Crayford.

It was then owned by the brewery Noakes & Company, later becoming a Courage brewery, before finally falling into Enterprise Inns ownership. During 2010 the name was briefly changed to the Elm Tree. But in March 2013 the pub closed and was boarded up, before being sold to Lidl on 5th April 2013.

Planning permission was granted by the Planning Inspectorate, at the second appeal in March 2022, with the condition that a ‘commemorative notice board’ be installed in a prominent location and maintained during the lifetime of the development.

The pub was demolished in June 2022 following a 9-year battle by local residents. More information about the history of this campaign is available from Bromley CAMRA. Write to contact @ bromley.camra.org.uk

A Lidl supermarket is expected to be opened on the site in the first quarter of 2023.
