This Pub is Permanently Closed

With demolition imminent, this former pub closed at the end of March 2018, having been refurbished and re-opened in June 2013. It was sold to the London Property Group Ltd in January 2019 for redevelopment into apartments, before being transferred on the property market to the Hermitage Property Group.

According to Bromley Council:

"This demolition work is an absolute last resort, with our structural engineers advising that the building has become even more unstable and is now dangerous."

Previously, planning permission had now been granted by Bromley Council for conversion of the pub into flats with the proviso that the ground floor be retained as a public house: 22/01001/FULL2

Historic Interest

First recorded in 1864, this opened in 1867 as a hotel and public house to serve the expanding suburb of Anerley, with new housing being built on what was once Penge Common. Among the architectural features, the bar counter featured a heated rail running along the bottom for keeping drinkers feet warm. A distinctive sign stood on a post out front until the 1980s. Located adjacent to the entrance to Betts Park (which originally opened in 1928 and contains a short stretch of the abandoned Croydon Canal), this would have been a popular venue for visitors. The pub also overlooked the tram routes from Croydon to both Crystal Palace and Penge (from 1906 to 1933). In 1900 the locality was transferred from Surrey to Kent with the new county border located nearby on Selby Road. The pub later became a tied Courage house.
