Historic Interest
Originally the New Empire cinema, built in 1931 on the site of the earlier Empire cinema which had opened in 1912. The cinema reportedly closed in the early 1960s. No information on any other subsequent owners, but the premises housed an amusement arcade for several years until bought by the Barracuda Group (later the Bramwell Pub Company) and converted into a ‘Smith & Jones’ pub named the Paramount (after the Paramount Car Company), which opened in 2007. This closed in 2013. Subsequent changes of owner/operator have seen a number of refurbishments, name changes, and periods of closure.
