This Pub is Permanently Closed

A Grade II listed free house believed to date from mediaeval times. It is situated midway between Ipswich & Bury st. Edmunds. The pub has a warm & friendly atmosphere & caters for all types of functions. To the left of the entrance is a separate public bar with a pool table, dart board & other pub games. Straight ahead is the lounge, dining room, & restaurant. B&B rooms were opened mid-2010. IT WAS REPORTED ON 1ST MARCH 2016 THAT THIS PUB WAS NOW A PRIVATE B&B AND NO LONGER A PUB. THIS IS CONFIRMED BY THEIR WEBSITE.

Historic Interest

A report in the Ipswich Journal** on Mar-22 in 1862 when Benjamin Payne was the landlord states that : "Alfred Snell & Jonathon "Tidy" Stiff were found guilty of stealing the life savings of Edward Scarf at Preston. Benjamin Payne landlord of the White Horse, Hitcham, confirmed that Snell had been at his house looking for "Tidy" Snell on the Friday after the robbery. When questioned by the police Stiff claimed he had not seen Snell "since he was up sodgering with me". Snell & Stiff were sentenced to three years penal servitude." A report in the Bury & Norfolk Post & Suffolk Herald*** on 04 Apr in 1882 states that : "Reference to Eunice HUDSON of the White Horse Inn, Hitcham, in a claim against William Bird & James Hoddy, labourers, both residing at Brettenham, involving damage to a wire blind, some mugs & a glass, valued at 10s. On 11 Mar 1882, William Mann, a witness, stated that he went to Hudson's to carry some wood, & saw both defendants dancing on a table. A further charge of disorderly conduct & refusing to quit was raised & the defendants were found guilty & fined 10s each & costs of 15s 6d. In a later case, Mrs Hudson brought a similar charge against William Robinson, labourer, on 23 Dec 1882 & he was fined 21s with 8s costs." A report in the Bury & Norfolk Post & Suffolk Herald*** on 05 Aug in 1884 states that : "Eunice HUDSON, of the White Horse Inn, Hitcham, charged George Nunn, a bricklayer from Bildeston, with breaking into her house. Minnie Beeton (her granddaughter) had served the prisoner in the afternoon. He was committed for trial at the assizes." A report in the Bury & Norfolk Post & Suffolk Herald*** on 02 Sep in 1884 states that : "Mrs Eunice HUDSON. landlady of the White Horse, Hitcham, was found guilty of allowing drunkeness at her house. Fined £2 & 11s 6d costs - Paid & conviction recorded on licence. She was later warned about her future conduct." A report in the Bury & Norfolk Post & Suffolk Herald*** on 27 Oct in 1885 makes reference to Caleb HUDSON. landlord of the White Horse Inn, Hitcham.
