This Pub is Closed Long Term

Excellent conversion of a former YMCA. It is named after a young lad who helped save lives and comfort the dying after a major subsidence during the building of Newport docks on 2 July 1909. The interior is on two levels with a family section taking up part of the lower/street level while the main bar is one floor up; this gives access to an outdoor drinking/smoking area. Somehow redolent of a ferry, there are several pictures of local interest on the walls including the story of Tom Toya Lewis; members of his family were present at the pub's reopening in May 2018. Note buffet breakfast s are served served from 8-12 noon, thereafter main meals are served until 8pm. A carvery is served Wed-Sun 12 noon-4pm. Karaoke DJ Fri from 9pm and quiz night Sun at 8pm.

Historic Interest

Former YMCA, opened as a pub by JD Wetherspoon before its sale. Newport & Gwent CAMRA once gave a talk about CAMRA to YMCA members on 23 April 1979.
