This Pub is Permanently Closed
The location given for the pub is approximate, it is variously described as being in Newport Road and Horsefair and as "across the road from the Eagle", it seems to have been at the junction of Small Lane and Horsefair. George William Beech was the licensee in 1901 but John Hammond had taken over by 1904 and was there until the pub closed. Eley's Brewery of Stafford were the owners. The licence was refused in 1906 but, as with the British Grenadier, the compensation was appealed to the Inland Revenue Commissioners and their ruling was made late in 1907. The pub closed early in 1908. John Hammond may then have become a coachbuilder. The building has subsequently been demolished.
In 1906 it was described to the Staffordshire Licencing Committee "The drinking rooms consisted of a taproom & kitchen combined, a bar and a smokeroom. The rooms were low. There was no private living-room accommodation for the licensee and his family except for the scullery. There were stables for 7 horses and tying-up for 14 horses. The Eagle just across the road afforded better accommodation than the Swan. It was one of the oldest licensed properties in Eccleshall."
