This Pub is Permanently Closed

This pub and restaurant is named after a local man who became the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1206 and who was involved in the writing of Magna Carta, a copy of which is displayed in the bar. Stephan Langton, reputedly born in Friday Street and brought up in nearby Broadmoor, inspired the book of his name by Martin Tupper. There has been a pub on the site for many years, but the current one was only built in the 1930s after the previous building was probably destroyed by fire. The pub is cosy and welcoming with wood burning fires in winter and a pleasant outdoor patio area for sunnier days. Dogs are welcome in the bar and snug. Situated in good walking country, by an old hammer pond, it gets especially busy in the summer. All food is freshly cooked and is locally sourced, with the menu changing seasonally. It is best to book, especially at weekends, as the food is justifiably very popular. The pub won both Best Local Menu and Pub of the Year at the 2016 Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards and were finalists in Best Local Menu in 2017. Food is available from 12-3 and 6:30-9 Tuesday to Friday, 12-9 Saturday and from 12-4 Sunday. It might be best to use the nearby walkers' car park to the west if the limited parking is full. All four handpumps are used in the summer but in the winter there are usually three beers available. Beers tend to be from the Tillingbourne Brewery (5 miles away) as the landlady's husband is one of that brewery's owners. Gin lovers will appreciate the 42 different gins on offer. Note that the pub is closed all day Monday apart from Bank Holidays when Sunday hours are observed. Closed March 2020 and awaiting new owners.
